Today’s Text: Zechariah 4:1-14
Key Verses: Zechariah 4:6 (NIV): “So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.”

Have you ever felt inadequate? Have you ever been confronted by an assignment or a task in which you know that you have no way, no knowledge and no capabilities to live up to expectations? You are not alone! Great men of God: prophets, priests and kings have been called, who felt inadequate and unprepared for the tasks. Moses said: who am I that I should go. He also confessed his speech disability. Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress because he was so afraid of the Midianites that he had to hide himself from to harvest his own crop. So, when God's Word came to him, he quickly confessed he is not able and qualified. Barak was so afraid and felt so weak that he said to Deborah, a woman: “If you will go with me, I will go, but if you will not go with me, I will not go.” Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty warrior, but the son of a prostitute. Isaiah was a man of unclean lips. Jeremiah was a child. And of course, all 12 disciples were unlearned men.
We all come to God with inadequacies and weaknesses. But what makes the difference is the agency of the Holy Spirit. Today's generation of believers face a situation similar to Zerubbabel’s. God's temple (now people, not buildings) are in ruins. The grand goal of the Church is to restore them. We are to clear away the rubbish that conceals God’s glory, and build a brand new people for the Lord. If we consider the level of the ruins and the decay, there is no way the vision can be realised. Looking at the situation, we feel inadequate, and slide back in despair. But if we listen to the soul stirring voice of the Lord in this text, we are stirred by the agency of God's mighty, and powerful Holy Spirit. Our encouragement and ability comes from the Lord of hosts. We are not weak folks. Our aid is the Spirit, not the flesh.
Quote for the Day: “In carrying out its arduous assignment, the church needs to be proactive; yet its proactivity does not, cannot, and must not supersede or replace the activity of the Holy Spirit.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, ignite within my soul, the passion to depend upon you, and trust the agency of Your Spirit, in Jesus' name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
