Today’s Scripture Threshing for Sunday, May 5, 2019
Today’s Text: Proverbs 20:1-4
Key Verse: Proverbs 20:3 (ESV): “It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling.”
The Greeks has a myth about a brute beast that once threatened one of their demigods. They has it that the beast was wrestled to by this demigod, but instead of dying it grew much larger. It was wrestled again and again and each time it grew in size until finally it completely hold down the powerful demigod
. Then his (the demigod’s) advisor appeared, who cautioned the wrestling demigod as follows: “See, that monster is called Strife, and unless you let it alone, it keeps growing. If you let it be, it shrinks smaller and smaller till it dies.
Strife is angry or bitter disagreement over any issue. Today’s text instructs God;s people to beware of this quick-flaming anger called strife. It usually is a mark of the shallow and foolish heart. Like the Greeks legendary myth, it seeks the help of an angry man to puff and grow. Any believer who must conquers quick-temper must do so by Christ’s kind of meekness — which all of us must cultivate as the chiefest of Christian graces. We are to cease from strife or cause it to cease—which takes a humble, broken and submissive heart to do.
Quote for the Day: “In the thought of the foolish, to give in is to cheap-in; but a wise man will flee the brute beast of strife even while he feels its shameful to run.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Lord Jesus, in the spirit of — Romans 16:17 that urges us, “to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them.” — help me to eschew strife and rancor, Lord. And above all, it is my desire to be like you. Amen.
