Today’s Text: Nahum 2:3-13

Key Verses: Nahum 2:4 (ESV) “The chariots storm through the streets, rushing back and forth through the squares. They look like flaming torches; they dart about like lightning.”

Why does this generation look so forlorn, and the Christian soldiers backward rather than onward? Why do our soldiers flee from the fight as though the cross were out of sight? Why do children die with milk in their mouths and Christ’s ambassadors loath to reach them? Why do the people perish as if there were no prophets in the land? I believe we gave a single simple answer: We have completely departed the old path, and have divided our hearts from the source. We have detached ourselves from the vine, without which, we have been warned, we could do nothing. We seem to have been totally swallowed up by all earth's vicissitudes, and lost the vision of heaven. And, of course, we are now facing what the scripture means by “the people perish when there is no vision.”

God is speaking to this lost and troubled generation through every line of this text of Nahum. This Oracle of Nahum, and Nineveh’s men passing through throbbing hearts have actually become the parable of our own lives. The prophet predicted the ruin of Nineveh in the midst of a rather prosperous economy. Don't our ruins come in the midst of plenty?! The prophet saw beyond the reign of Hezekiah (B.C. 725-696), and the destruction of Nineveh (B.C. 608). Images of our key text describe even more clearly our postmodern streets and highways. Meaning that the downfall of Nineveh prefigures this ruthless and untoward generation. And unfortunately, we are missing something major that Nineveh did not miss. We miss the voice of God's true Nahums.

Our modern day Nahums have all sold their bellies to gluttony, and their hearts to ignominy so that their visions are now illusions. Their eyes have become dull that they can not even perceive or judge what is true anymore. We call Nahum a minor prophet, but he saw through the dark ages and centuries. Whereas our major prophets cannot even see through the day. We all claim to be God's people; yet we utter words of our own, and color those we received of the Lord with odious hypocrisy. It is unfortunate that we fall victim of Nahum oracle in 2:6. We have all been folden together as thorns, and drunken as drunkards, and so is our generation devoured as fully dry stubble. O that we all will repent and return to the Lord. If we do, then true vision can once again burst in our sights. And no longer shall our people cast off restraint. But we shall all be blessed and heed wisdom’s instruction.

Quote for the Day: “Eden was a paradise until the Fall. Nineveh could not be taken until its river became its own enemy. Jericho’s situation was good until its water caused it death. No generation could be lost except the church lost its vision." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: O Lord my God, confuse every power that works against supremacy of heavenly vision in me. I bind and subdue every spirit on a mission against my goal of heaven. And I command them to flee out of their hidden places, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
