Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, May 31, 2021
Today’s Text: Matthew 5:1-5
Key Verse: Matthew 5:3 (TLB) — “Humble men are very fortunate!” he told them, “for the Kingdom of Heaven is given to them."

You can't beat the simplicity of The Living Bible translation as against the common “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” We are living in humbling times: a period in which the pandemic and several events of our days leave us humbled. Our dependence, desperacy and need for God are becoming more and more evident by the day. But we have a text before us this morning calling us to a life that recognizes our need for God not only when things are looking bad; but at all times.
The Greek word Makarios translated blessed has been simplified by our carefully chosen version in the light of its fortune. It tells of a condition of happiness and fortune that has nothing to do with outward condition or appearance. You may be rich or poor; hit or spared by the pandemic; famous or obscure: in whatever condition of life we are, God requires all mankind to recognize their need for Him. The text is not promoting physical poverty as a happier state than that of riches but depicting a nan’s genuine sense of lack and lostness without God as spiritual poverty.
It takes a humble soul to admit that his riches, technology, and knowledge cannot save him if God would not. This feeling is what is described as the idea of poverty towards God, and a fortunate position to be. It gives us a humble opinion of ourselves: a recognition that we are sinners, having no righteousness of our own; and willing to be saved only by the rich grace and mercy of God. This takes humility before God: an openness to be who and where God allows us. This position is opposed to our lust, pride, vanity, and ambition. However, it is in thinking of ourselves as we are that God gives us grace. Those are the men that are fortune to be blessed in the spirit, and of course, the highest fortune which is the kingdom of heaven hereafter.
Quote for the Day: “True fortune is not to be found in wreaths and honor, in riches and or splendor, or even in our deepest pleasure. True fortune is found in knowing God." (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I want to learn to trust You with my life regardless of what or how it is, in Jesus' name. Amen.
Have a fantastic service today and happy month end.
With all my love and prayers,
