The Gaius’ Factor

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, July 9, 2021

Today’s Text: 3 John 1: 1-14

Key Verses: 3 John 1:2 (NLT): “Dear friend, I hope all is well with you and that you are as healthy in body as you are strong in spirit.”

Our total wellness matters to God. To become a healthy instrument in His hands, we must make sure we live holistic lives: A life that places premium on both spiritual nurture and bodily wellbeing. Before Gaius grew up to become a traveling companion of Paul, along with Aristarchus in the mission to Macedonia, he was probable a protégé of John. And this prayer of this apostle for him indicates that he was already a man of healthy spirituality before his spiritual mentor can now wish for a bodily health to support the spiritual. Perhaps, nobody can be any more useful in the spiritual realm and office than the wholesome care he takes of his physical life. As long as it pleases God to house our spiritual giant within the enclave of the corporeal frame; we shall always need sound bodily health to support the continuance of our spiritual being, existence and operations.

What was in the mind of John when he prayed for Gaius may not be very clear; but what cane from his letter helps us find meaning. The content reveals the apostle’s conviction: that a sound and prosperous body is possible. Indeed, it is our spiritual heritage as long as our faith and character firmly flourish in Christ. Whereas sin remains the disease of the human soul; the word of God gives us the power to subdue and renew it daily. This is the way our soul-health is restored and our spirt becomes prosperous. In the some measure, a healthful and prosperous spirit is filled with discernment to take responsibility over the body. Like brother Gaius, we are called to acknowledge that part of our love to God is our devotion to our whole being as God's stewards of our bodies.

Quote for the Day: “The inward presence of Christ both gives evidence to and is consistent with the outward manifestation of stewardship and decorum; and vice versa.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me to give careful thoughts to my bodily and spiritual wellbeing. Help me keep a healthy balance each passing moment, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
