The Lord Upholds His Men

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, September 22, 2021

Today’s Text: Psalm 37:23–28

Key Verses: Psalm 37:23–24 (ESV): “The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong,

for the Lord upholds his hand.”

Is there any doubt that we are all going through a kind of hurricane or some sort of typhoons right now? Is every cultural value and virtues seem to have been swept off by torrents of time? Who is it today that is not touched by one heatwave of time or the other? I remember walking with my dad and siblings to Yanayo, the family farmland on a fateful Saturday when it suddenly began to rain heavily. The sky darkens up and it was terribly windy. We found a hut and ran there to take cover. While in the borrowed hut, I watched a troubled bush of bamboo as it bends to the ground repeatedly by the very dangerously fierce wind. Loud thunderstorms, stormy winds, yet the bamboos did not break. It took us quite a while in that troubled spot; but the rainstorm was over, and the wind died down; the bamboos stood upright, and we continued our journey to Yanayo, the farm.

Friends, thoughts of how God holds His men in the middle of deadly storms always fill my heart anytime I remember that day. I have as well seen greater saving goodness of God in my life. We all face critical moments don’t we?! Is not the pandemic, other tragedies, family disintegration, economic instability, disappointment, and sickness buffeting us? — Yes, these things blow against us like hurricanes. But, through the love of Christ our Savior, we are here. Let us therefore gather greater strength from today’s scripture. Let us steady our courage, and look unto God who establishes our steps. Let us know for sure that the rainstorms will end, the winds shall be over, the bamboos shall yet stand erect, and we shall be unbroken. Because the Lord upholds the steps of His men. In Hebrew, man in this text actually refers to the righteous man, or otherwise, the blessed man. You and I are the righteous in/through Christ. He is our righteousness, and God upholds us.

Quote for the Day: “Left alone on our own strength, we are doomed to fall; but held in the palm of the Lord, our feet are eternally secure.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I know that even in the darkest hours, You are always with us. Please bless each person going through storm. Surround them with Your love, protection, in Jesus' name. Amen
