Valentine’s Special: The Manner Matters

Our Text: 1 John 3:1-6

Key Verses: 1 John 3:1 (KJV): “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

You have probably heard that manner is everything; so, before I say or you say “Happy Valentine’s Day,” appreciating what true love is all about calls for an understanding of the position of man, the object of God’s amazing love, when God lavished such a great love, described in today’s text, upon him. The opening “behold” calls our attention to the fact of how God loved man when he was no longer as he was created, but as he was marred by sin and rebellion against Him. Divine Love is not based on complacency, it is based on compassion. Genuine love is never from admiration, but from essence and worth.

Our generation missed it because it despises such manner of benevolent and genuine love; and seek after sensual manner. However, we are called to behold, look upon, or pay attention to the manner in which God loves us with love that does not seek its own, but our well-being; not rejoicing over the good and rejecting the ugly; but seeking with great sacrifice to beautify the unworthy. He loves us “despite of”, not “because of.” Do not settle today or any time for any manner of love that’s selfish. Embrace true love or God. Happy Valentine’s Day!
