Our Text: Philippians 4:10-20
Key Verses: Philippians 4:12 (ESV): “I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.”
The secret to contentment is not in wealth, achievement or enlightenment. It is not in religious services or attainment. It is a secret already made public through the declared word of God. God knows how insatiable we are. How much we are like the pilot who always looked down intently on a certain valley in the Appalachians when the plane passed overhead. Whom when his co-pilot asked, “what’s so interesting about that spot,” he replied: When I was a kid I used to fish by that stream, and every time an airplane flew over, I would look up and wish I were flying... Now I look down and wish I were fishing.
Is that not how we are? Always thinking others have it better than we do, and that if we just had “a little more” everything would be fine. But contentment cannot be achieved by increasing possessions. Nothing will ever be enough. But our admonition today is never to allow anxiety about life: what you will eat, what you will put on, or where you will live to run you off. Learn from the words of Paul, who shared from a prison cell, how he had learned in whatever situation, to be content. This doesn’t mean you stop being progressive or desirous of good things, but it is graciously welcoming, appreciating and enjoying the blessings of the Lord in your life as you continue to look forward to all that He has in store for you.
Quote for the Day: “Thankfulness for what we have is a lead way to having more; and insatiableness in all that’s got is a sure way to losing all.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, shield my thoughts with your peace, comfort my soul with your love, and teach me the joy of giving you thanks for everything I have, and every situation I’m in, in Jesus Christ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
