The Shielding Goodness of God

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, July 18, 2021

Today’s Text: Nahum 1:7, 8

Key Verse: Nahum 1:7 (NIV): “The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.”

By all means and standards, God desires for us to live good lives. He promotes our interests and happiness each passing moment. That is what the words "the Lord is good" stand for in the mind of Nahum. All through the scripture, God’s prophets are united in affirming the character and disposition of Yahweh to shield and help His people. God is not only disposed to doing us good; but He has all powers to do it at His disposal. He is always present to exerts that power in blessing, helping, rescuing, preserving and saving those who fear Him. Though the days come or are coming when elements of this feeble world burn like a furnace; when all arrogant men and every evildoer are consumed as stubbles. Malachi testified in chapter 4 verse 1 that upon anyone who fears the name of the Lord shall the sun of righteousness rise with healing in his wings."

No matter what your situation might be; God wants you to trust and enjoy His goodness. It is already a finished work for those who belong to Him. All you need to do is simply plug and plunge into the streams of His limitless flux of goodness; and you will find it an ever flowing, ever increasing spring. This enlivening truth runs through the text of Nahum, and indeed, throughout Scriptures as a constant reminder to us. It is the heritage of men and women who fear the Lord. To fear the Lord does not represent slavish trepidation. No, it means walking and living in awe of Him. It means we are His faithful friends and loving children. So, we honor Him with due awe, reference, and trust.

If you belong to this fortunate club: and you love and trust in God, you are blessed to enjoy God’s character of goodness. With His love, He provides all your needs. By His infallible wisdom He guides you through life journey. His truth is your shield. His joy, your strength; and He cares for you in every way. Nahum’s idea of “the Lord knows” is a reflection on the fact that God recognizes our zeal, loyalty and love for His name sake. He acknowledges our obedience. And it is always blessed to love and trust in the Lord.
