The True Father

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, June 20, 2021

Today’s Text: 2 Corinthians 6:11-18

Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 6:18 (KJV): “And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.”

Among our many joys of reading today’s text, the chief is the manner in which God here promises to be what He is already. Something that is common to God whenever He is reassuring us. He knows that we all need this emphasis. We are in a dire, dangerous and dreary time, and we need all the confidence that He is there for us in His unfailing part as our Father. Especially, when, before our eyes, many fathers fail to play the men, or act the part of a father to their children. God, the Father of all, reassures us that He cannot act in such unpaternal way toward us. He is a just Father, and does allow anyone or anything to unjustly treat or touch us. He is eternally merciful to us.

On a different ground, God needed the declaration: “I will be a Father unto you” because in so many ways we refuse to act like His children; and our actions disallow Him to act His fatherly part. Many times we are like the Prodigal Son. The father is still the father, but he, for a season, could not act the part of a father, just because that child removed himself from fatherly watch to a far country. In like manner, we let our sins remove us. We walk in greed and disobedience. But the good news is: no matter how faraway we wander; God promises to readmit us into heirship if and when we penitently return.

If we return to Him, we have all the blessings of a true father in Him: He would protect, counsel, and guide us. He would instruct us, provide for us, and counsel us when we are in desperation. No other relation or earthly father could be as tender as He. God promises that He will be all these to us. As we celebrate the Father’s Day today, let us be reminded that no higher honor can be conferred on us than to be adopted into the family of God, and be permitted to call the Most High our Father. The only one thing left is the question: would you allow Him to be father to you? If you are not born into God’s family, would you repent toward Him and let Him come into your heart by faith and truly be your father?

Quote for the Day: “We are blessed be and to have earthly fathers; but God remains our all-time example — the Father of our spirits, and father in all matters." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Happy Father’s Day! With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
