There was a Man (Part Four)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, May 12, 2023

Today’s Text: Luke 19: 1-10

Key Verses: Luke 19:8 (ESV): “And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.”"

The tortoise always comes down with bad reputation in African folklores. Once, Mr.  Tortoise reached out with folded fist, and his children spread out theirs to receive. But he said: “Did you ever know me with the habit of giving?!” Closing in on Zacchaeus’ story reveals the place and necessity for a new purpose than whatever has been natural or habitual with us. We are challenged to double down on various aspects of our lives that needed some drastic changes and measures — especially when it comes to righting some wrongs that we have done. Zacchaeus was ready to go the extra mile to be a better person.

He was ready to restore and restitute even above and beyond every ill-gotten wealth even when that might deplete much of his ego, wealth or honor. This leaves us a lesson that what matters, after all, in life, is knowing and doing the Lord’s will. So, friend, it is high time we straighten out our priorities, and give careful thoughts to what should rather be our driving force in life.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself: What would I need to give up for the sake of following Jesus? How has the lessons from Zacchaeus stirred me into pursuing whatever God puts on my heart? Of course, yours may not have be so cruel or wayward a past; or so extravagant and lavish a life as Zacchaeus’, but there is a path or an action that God is laying on your heart to take that pictures or necessitates the Zacchaeus kind of steps. Would you yield to God and be obedient to whatever He tells you to do?!

Quote for the Day: “Perhaps, the most difficult thing for any natural man is righting his wrongs. It is at that point that we know how strong the siege of ego is over him; or how melted his heart is toward God. (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, have mercy on me. Provoke and revive a broken and contrite heart within me and heal me. Set me free from the ego of pride. Bring me to the foot of the cross and empty my vanities there O Lord — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
