“Things to Remember (Part 1)”

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, February 17, 2021

Today’s Text: John 2:13-22

Key Verses: John 2:22 (NLT) — “After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered he had said this, and they believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said.

Jesus brings up deep spiritual metaphors into conversation whenever He needs us to connect physical realities with spiritual truth. There are things human memory cannot fail to store up in its treasure: which we'd just continue to remember. Unfortunately, there are other things we should not forget; which fade off our mind because our memory is not always reliable. The temple falls within the latter category. For all it represents to and for the people of Israel, who could ever think a time will come when imported synagogues would spring and replace the temple? A first temple began at Bethlehem: it was built by Solomon, destroyed by the Chaldees and raised again by Zerubbabel. The second temple was raised by God Himself, also at Bethlehem, the temple greater than the one built by human hands, which God allowed to be destroyed by the Jews.

Christ came to earth to offer His body to be destroyed by wicked men for the remission of the sins of all. His temple must be destroyed and rebuilt to restore true glory that will not be exclusive to Israel; but one by which all nations may come to the light of God's glory. He spoke to his disciples about this grand plan. Through His death on the cross and His ressurection from the dead, His body becomes the foundation and precursor of a new covenant. This sacrifice will bring many saints, whose bodies also shall becme temples of the living God, to glory. He has the power to lay down His body and to raise it up again. However, broken by their loss, and engrossed in ignorance, His disciples could not recall their masters’ word, or fathom this grand and glorious plan: not until all these have been done.

While we too grapple with all the heart breaking situations around us today, let us not be lost in the mace of things we must remember. Let us recall Christ’s death and resurrection by which our faith and hope are established. Let us remember that He laid down His body to enograft us into His own body and kingdom. Let us recall that by His dead, we have been made living temples of the living God! Let us remember that sin destroys that temple and righteousnes in Christ alone builds it. These are things to remember today, and there more to come tomorrow. God bless you.

Quote for the Day: ”The natural man who receives Jesus as his personal Lord and Savior is engrafted into spiritual templeship in which God dwells.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord, prepare me a sanctuary pure and holy; tried and true, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
