“Things to Remember (Part 2)”

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, February 18, 2021

Today’s Text: John 2:13-23

Key Verse: John 2:17 (ESV) — “His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.””

The resurrection of Jesus Christ helped His disciples to remember what He promised in relation to His body as the true temple. Before this spiritual enlightenment was another very crucial thing to remember. As they watched Him purge the desecrated temple, they remembered David's messianic prophecy in Psalm 69:9: “Zeal for your house will consume me.” While today's objects of religious zeal vary from personal victory over enemies to fulfilment, from breakthrough to healing, and restoration, to success, and so on; the object of Christ's zeal remains the house of God, which the Jews had thought only their temple symbolized, but the Bible makes us to know that God's house is no longer that which is made with bricks. People’s heart, not their houses; their souls, not their seeds (offering) is the object of Christ’s zeal. God's house includes all remnants of Adam's seeds that comes or may come to Christ. Our Lord was consumed by the zeal to prevent sinners from God's wrath; and though they reject/ed Him; His zeal to make them God's house made Him to endure the cross.

The manifest zeal of the Lord reveals a heart consuming dedication. True and godly zeal is deeper than confession of the mouth. It is a force that takes full hold of people's heart. The key text literally means to be eaten up by zeal for God's sake. When we eat, the food turns into our very substance. When we heat metals in red hot furnaces, they take on the red hot nature of the furnace. When men come to Christ, they take on His nature. Where then is this Christlike zeal among those grafted into His body today? What happened to the zeal that sees God's house desecrated, or His holy name dishonoured and is consumed by godly indignation? Where is the Savior-like zeal that provoked godly sorrow in the spirit of Christ? Where are the few men that are moved to purge these desecrated temples? The principle and dynamics are broad — we must remember we have been called to zealously rescue this world from its lostness, and to build up desecrated and fractured men and women into living temples of the living God. We must remember the zeal of the Lord, and walk in His foot steps. “For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps.” (1 Peter 2:21)

Quote for the Day: ”As Christians, we have been called into a rescue mission in which we zealously salvage the remnant of our world.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Implant within my heart, dear Lord, the fiery zeal like those of your prophets of old, fuel my passion and conviction and let it consume the whole of me, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
