“Things to Remember (Part 3)”

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, February 19, 2021

Today’s Text: John 2:13-23

Key Verse: John 2:22 (NASB) — “So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

I welcome you all to the third and final series of “Things to Remember!” Twice in our text, we encountered the phrase: “His disciples remembered” and once we came across another phrase: “and then they believed.” This makes these bands of disciples look pretty much like us. Because often, we either need God to speak twice before we hear Him once, or need Him to touch us a second time before we see clearly. I wonder why they needed to wait till after His death on the cross and His resurrection from the dead before they finally recalled and understood His words. They were with Him all the way as He went about fulfilling everything that belongs to His messianic manifest. The truth is, no matter how religious a person is, except he allows the finished work of Christ in his life, he is naturally unable to fathom God's truth. The Bible says, “For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.” (Matthew 13:15)

We all have got things to remember here: we must remember Christ's cross and His empty tomb; and as a response, we must live out the life consistent with that memory. That is the way to grow up to the next level of our walk with the Lord. We must remember the agony of His cross; and the victory of His ressurection. We must remember to do what Christ Himelf comannded us to do in His remembrance. He had commanded us to pray the Lord of the harvest; to love the Lord our God with all our hearts; to love one another; and to “go ye into all the world.” But here, He commands us to do the Lord’s Supper in remembrance of Him. Why? It reminds us of what He has done for us when He broke His body. This memory strengthens our faith and hope in His glorious second coming. Therefore, let us not only partake in the body which was broken for us, or only partake of the blood of His eternal covenant, poured out for the remission of our sins; but let us all remember that we are not called to live in memories alone. We are called to continue to renew our faith, hope and love every day, and in every way. Let us remember!

Quote for the Day: ”Allowing the Holy Spirit to cast the light of biblical truth upon our hearts opens us up not only to remembering, but also to understsnding God's truth.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Yet shall I ask again, O Lord, that the fiery fire of your zeal, which you implanted in your prophets of old, which was also in Christ Jesus, be implanted within my heart. Let it fuel my passion for you, and consume the whole of me, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
