TRUST THE FUTURE TO GOD

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, August 18, 2022

Today’s Text: Jeremiah 29:1-14

Key Verse: Jeremiah 29:11(ESV): “For I know the plans I have for you, declares  the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”

Augustine of Hippo, also known as Saint Augustine, a theologian, philosopher and bishop of Hippo Regius in Numidia, North Africa once wrote: “Trust the past to God’s mercy, the present to God’s love and the future to God’s providence.” One of Church’s most exciting promissory scriptures is before us today. And it is so enlivening and strengthening because it assures us that we are in the thoughts of God. The words “saith the Lord” assures us that this gracious assurance did not come from the prophet’s spirit. No, it was made up by Jeremiah. Rather, it came from the sovereign Lord who is really mindful of His exiled and troubled children.  The God we serve is not a philosophic abstraction, or an opium of peoples’ mind. He is a true and living God, who is mindful of every minute detail of each of us from the greatest to the smallest.

I know that you are having that bad day or time; but don’t you ever think you are not in the “thoughts” of God. Perhaps, your story is not very different from God’s people living in Babylonian exiles right now; but, like to them, God has also sent you an oracle. Regardless of your present situation, God’s promise for you is an “expected end.” You don’t have to worry or shrink in fear. Your story is not yet concluded or over. Just trust God: He’s got a better time in store for you. Waiting for that future may be tough for such a generation as ours — an age driven by instant gratification and delusive assurances. But God’s words of wisdom to you and I today is to just trust Him, who alone knows the thoughts that He thinks towards us. Desist from those prophets who speaks lies after our own chosen fancies. They speak things of their own. Put your trust in God who alone knows the plans He has for you.

Prayer:  Dear Lord, please help me to hear You and trust You as my hope over all the other voices. I run to you with both hands stretched out. I put my hands into Yours to lead me on to Your plans for me — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
