Victory by Faith

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, May 15, 2022

Today Text: 1 John 5:1 -12

Key Verse: 1 John 5:4 (NIV): “For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.”

The song of popular Nigeria’s Juju music Maestro, Chief Michael Adedayo, popularly known as Micho Ade, constantly comes to mind when thinking about this world as a battlefield. The musician understands life’s journey as a complete array of battles. "Survival of the fittest," a phrase that originated from Darwinian evolutionary theory, literally describes the mechanism of the natural way by which species perpetuate themselves. The spiritual sum of these is that we live in a world that only festers and progresses through conflict — the conflict being of two kinds — physical and spiritual. Things are hard already in the physical spheres. Nations rise against nations in war; our politics has been turned into subtle wars in which parties don’t just seek to overcome by sheer force of numbers anymore but by any means of hate. Moral battles of truth against error, injustice against justice, and faith against all forces of fables are also real battles against our souls. But there is this biblical kind of victory that corresponds to, and covers, every form of life’s battle — material, moral, political, or spiritual — in which a more permanent victory is achieved. The beloved Apostle tells us that true life victory happens by faith. It is believers’ greatest and surest conquering weapon. Great examples of men and women abound in scripture who demonstrate how to overcome anything in this life by faith. Abraham inherited nations by faith. Deborah, a mother in Israel, rose, fought, and won by faith, in the days of Jael, when the highways were abandoned; travelers took to winding paths, and men of Israel held back and would not fight. By faith, Hannah rejoices in the Lord until her horn was lifted high. We can go on through the endless chronicles of faith, but the list will not be complete until you too have experienced the victory of/by faith.

Prayer: Dear Lord, please give patient, understanding of faith in You, and fill our souls with mountain-moving faith. Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties and grant that no battles of life may shake us from off our ground — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
