Watching for the Ravens

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, March 3, 2021

Today’s Text: 1 Kings 17:1-7

Key Verse: 1 Kings 17:5 (NIV) — “So he did what the Lord had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there."

The unfolding story of divine dealing with Elijah, and with us continues. Pathways of God's men are different; but they all must learn the same dynamic principles. That is why the scriptures are given to us for our example. So that by them we might profit in doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. Therefore, this morning, the Lord would have us trace the way to Cherith yet again. Cherith teaches us that God causes all things, land and sky, to serve His glorious purpose in the life of anyone who follows Him. Cherith reveals how God used a drying brook as timely water for His chosen servant. It shows us how God used birds of the air to serve Elijah. Our devotion to God can attract uncommon devotion of created things in our service and for our good.

Cherith also teaches us that whenever God leads us through a pathway that is very difficult, we can rest in Him to take care of us and the difficult path. God never leads His men to a place where His grace is not sufficient for them. At Cherith, we learn that God feeds His men because God sent ravens to feed Elijah twice each day. We are cumbered with many cares — legitimate life issues; but God wants us to trust His word and follow Him in obedience. When we do, He makes all things to work together for good to them that love Him (Romans 8:28) — from the water of the earth to the birds of the air — all things are able to serve us. If He took care of Elijah in those unexpected ways, He will take care of us in incredibly supernatural ways. Know this: He could have chosen another way to settle Elijah, but He chose the Cherith way and the ravens bakery so that we may have some example. Elijah was not seeking the Cherith. He was not seeking the brook’s water or the raven’s food. He simply sought after God, and all these things were added. As we follow God, let us not seek him for the sake of gain. But let us seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33) Jesus rebuked men who sought Him because they did eat of His bread (John 6:27-35) But for us, even if trusting God appears like watching daily for the ravens, let us follow through. God always comes through for His men.

Quote for the Day: “Every Christian feeds on ravens. They are those uncommon occasions when we feed on God's gracious provisions.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: O Lord, Please grant me the grace to follow and trust you each passing day. Teach me to follow through the paths you have chosen for me, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
