“What Sort of a Soil are You?”

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, February 7, 2021

Today’s Text: Matthew 13:1-23

Key Verses: Matthew 13:23 (NIV) — “But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.

We are all naturally stories loving people. From our youth, our parents and teachers tell us stories to pass down important morals from generation to generation. In all ages, great stories are used to indoctrinate younger ones on value systems, on cultural and on religious truths. During the days of Jesus, Rabbis often taught people by telling parables. Jesus championed this method during His days. He used stories based on earthly images to depict heavenly meaning or lessons. And each time, His purpose was to draw lives to kingdom truths and change men’s heart toward God!

Parables were stories Jesus told using things that people are familiar with to help them understand spiritual truths not familiar with. The essence of this payable is the emphasis on the blessing of hearing and seeking to understand the word of God. Our Lord explained the blessings involved when a person applies God's word to heart; not when he merely lets it fall an his intellect. We are looking for the man or woman who takes the word of God in; who discerns its meaning and does them. We do not have so much men anymore in our generation who are willing to listen to the Gospel and receive it as Mark’s account puts it. Or who, in an honest and good heart hear and retain it, according to Luke's parallel.

If you are blessed to be among the few who are obedient to the word of God despite the itchy ears of our day, then you are a good soil for the seed of God's word. Yes, there are different degrees of the fruit or result of the hearkening — some are in hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty — depending on how receptive you are; but we may congratulate you that you are a good soil to start with. It is not a coincidence that we will be going to houses of worship today, please avail yourself of the opportunity to be a good soil. The Lord sends this parable across this Sunday morning because he wants us to learn wisdom from it for our own good. What sort of soil are you going to be today? One that receives the word of God with an honest, noble, generous and good heart?!”

Quote for the Day: ”Nobility of heart is the honor of a man who gives entrance to God's seed upon the soil of his heart.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord, please make me both a hearer and the doer of Your word. Give me a determined spirit to always walk out what has been preached, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers, I wish you a refreshing time in the presence of the Lord,
