Who is Your Neighbor? (Part 1)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, October 28, 2021

Today’s Text: Luke 10:29-37

Key Verses: Luke 10:37 (NIV): “The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.

Humanly speaking, Jesus asked a seemingly very unnecessary question; but looking at the motive that prompted His question, you would agree that nothing could be more pertinent; or no better question could possibly have been asked. Jesus is aware that we are mostly self driven in many ways. We like drawing up our own interpretation to suit our selfish purposes. Like the Jews of Jesus’ time, we like excluding Divine thoughts and interpret things sensually or secularly. Our idea of things are already questionable so much that we now need to look at the obvious and still ask to confirm. For instance, today, we would have a man before us and still need to ask what his gender is. Everything is almost totally lopsided.

Therefore, though the truth is very obvious, it was important that Jesus asked who the man’s neighbor was. He wanted to leave His hearers with no opportunity for denying truth and pitching with half truth or falsehood. Truth must be allowed in our thoughts, feelings and practice. We must be truthful about those we are bound to love and help. We must be honest even when they are not our kindred, fellow-citizens or families. We must be truthful in relation to others and all. No permission, at all, to draw a line when God puts people on our way. Otherwise, we fail the test of Christ, have His faith in vain, and are fallen out of Christ’s discipleship ranks. Christ’s question to you today is who are those in your life whom you have been graced to show affection and kindness? Others may pass them by, and ignore them. But you must not!

Quote for the Day: “Christians are accountable to God in finding their neighbors everywhere and in every one, who has need of them. That’s neighborliness in the mind of Christ.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, let me be an example of a believer in words, actions, conversation and charity, Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D
