Why Desire a Middle State?!

Writer: Dr. Simon OlatunjiDr. Simon Olatunji

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, July 17 2022

Today’s Text: Proverbs30:7-9

Key Verse: Proverbs30:9 (NKJV): “Lest I be full and deny You, And say, “Who is the LORD?” Or lest I be poor and steal, And profane the name of my God.”

Do we still have any more trace of the old time religion which prayed for middle state and desire to be content? Is godliness and contentment counted any more as gain? This old time patriarch, Agur, sought with all eagerness to be kept away from temptations. He was a true human like us, tossed to and fro by life’s many needs; but all he ever asked for was the daily bread suited to his station, his family, and his real good. Agur wanted to be free from falsehood and lying, and to have just enough to live—being free from both poverty and wealth. He asks God for the middle state as a gift and says he won't be able to live an upright moral life without them.

We can look at the eagerness of this man and compare it with the Lord's prayer. And, indeed, we shall see that walking with God moves us more to a deeper desire of/for spiritual things than for physical. Having abundance make us prone to abuse and worries, but moderate life moves us to gratitude and a sense of dependence on God. Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied. Living godly is a reflection of our heart for Him. And no matter how beckoning the things of earth are, the kingdom of God should be our deepest and greatest attraction in our daily life.

Quote for the Day: “It is deeper wisdom and better life to spend time with God and take the time to learn His ways than to seek worldly pleasure." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, contentment is a gift and blessing from you only. Please teach me to be happy with all you have blessed me with. Let my happiness dwell in your word and the promise of your kingdom, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
