Wisdom versus Strength (Part Two)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, December 4, 2022

Today’s Text: Ecclesiastes 9:13-18

Key Verse: Ecclesiastes 9:16 (NIV): “So I said, “Wisdom is better than strength.” But the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are no longer heeded.”

There is a great light for all God’s people in this scripture text. It is a highly striking light. Power and strength discriminate against weak and poor men; but wisdom finds expressions with all people. For instance, a person may be poor and obscure; yet such may not necessarily be without unusual insight, ability, and skill to do, be, provoke and/or promote great things.

Today’s scripture comes to us with a humbling analogy of how God can use wisdom to accomplish great works with small source or means. The mighty always seeks to oppress weak. Their night is their strength; and the same is the intimidation and humiliation of the weak. Today’s kings and nobles are armed with numerous and formidable strength to besiege weak and small people. And by no means shall the weak be ever able to resist the strong. They take political power so easily. They gain influences so easily.

By means of strength and strive, poor men remain feeble, trampled, besieged and hopeless. But by the power of wisdom, weaklings may accomplish impossible tasks that vanquish their besiegers and turn back their sieges on them. Wisdom is profitable to direct. God wants His children to be wise towards Him. We have a straightforward admonition that should any of us lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. “But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.” (James 1:5-6)

Quote for the Day: “Never be a part of a public opinion that despises wisdom. It may not be reckoned with; but wisdom is always man’s sure defense.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please endow me with wisdom; and let it continue to grow in me as I make right and godly choices, and apply Your Word to my daily circumstances. Help me make good use of Your wisdom in my life even when the choices before me do not seem clear — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,
