Worth More than Many Sparrows

Today’s Scripture Threshings for Sunday, March 3, 2019

Today’s Text: Matthew 10:26-31

Key Verse: Matthew 10:29 (ESV): “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.

A penny was equivalent to a day's wage of a menial laborer in the days of Christ. Men who earn such wages were counted among the poor that the poor could say are poor. They were almost thought to literally have no hope—even if paid for a hundred years. They could not afford any leisurely life. They often resort to side practices such as fishing, household tasks, talent stewards, money doubling and/or even robbery. But, poor as they are, they could afford to pay for as many sparrows. They get two for just a penny, or five for two (Luke 12:6).

This tells how cheap the sparrows are: so cheap that they’d not be stolen. Poor men could afford as many of them. The point is, if your father watches these creatures so that none of them will fall to the ground without His knowledge; how much more shall He treasure you that He made in His image, and ransomed, “not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ” (1 Peter 1:18,19).

This is a most consoling teaching intended to help shun our fears and anxieties. For nothing can touch even our bodies without our heavenly Father’s permission. “Fear not therefore,” He said. Never make mistake about your worth. But in all situations cast your care on him who cares for you in this ways. The Master’s hyperbole: “the very hairs of your head are all numbered” is an assurance of who you are before God. Never let the devil lie to you. You’re worth much more than you realize. God pays attention to you. Yes, He cares for every details of your life. This allegory of sparrows is to let you know that even the incidents of life that seem most trivial are in very deed working together for good to those that love God. I see Jesus giving us a giving good ground of argument agains any satanic lie told to make us feel little or worthless.

Quote for the Day: “Anxiety and uncertainty are not capable of making our lives worth living; what they are capable of doing is make us believe lies told by the enemy.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: O LORD my God, in the name of Jesus Christ, please “grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Amen.” (A prayer attributed to Reinhold Neibuhr)
