You are Not Your Own

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, October 26, 2021

Today’s Text: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

Key Verses: 1 Corinthians 6:19 (ESV): “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own”

“I’m a man of myself!” That statement is a subtle rejection of divine ownership and preeminence in a life; yet most believers say it unwittingly. It is indeed a revelation of our abuse of the gift of life, our Christian liberty and of our utmost responsibility to the sanctity of our life which we owe to God. As Christians, our life’s philosophy must conform with this scriptural tenet that we owe everything in/of us to God. We must eschew the philosophical maxim that man is the measure for himself. If we owed ourselves, we would be beset by all forms of indiscriminate appetites that gratify fleshly control. And our liberty in Christ is therefore taken in negative light, and may have become libertinism.

Today’s text pictures how we have been liberated from the curtailment of freedom of old dispensations and are restored to a life of dominion in Christ; a life that puts all things under our feet. Yet we ourselves are eternally subject to the dominion of Christ. Therefore, we must avoid anything that lure us into profanity of our body. We must be conscious each day that life is a gift from God, and that we are His stewards in everything. Anything, including beliefs, mindset, lifestyle and philosophy that contradicts the Divine proprietorship of life is an aberration and a sacrilege. Even our Lord, who came to show us how God is and who man should be, laid us an example by in John 17:6 where He confessed, “They were Yours, You gave them to Me!”

Quote for the Day: “Belonging to Christ is perhaps the greatest opportunity and joy a believer may share whether in this borrowed transient body, or after we are glorified.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please give me the gift of faithful surrender that helps give up self pride and ego. Give me the zeal to do Your will in my life. I declare Your Lordship in my life forever! Even in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D
