Today’s Text: Matthew 7:7-11

Key Verse: Matthew 7:8 (ESV): “For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”

There’s always something fascinating about today’s scripture: it is a blessed awareness that our heavenly Father would not bid us pray and then refuse to hear us. He always gives what our hearts seek when that would not be hurtful to us. Today’s exhortation presents us with an acronym of the word ASK itself — Ask Seek and Knock. And you can trust that the Master was not playing with words. The emphasis is to let His children appreciate what blessing they have for obtaining all life’s good, as a right, simply by asking Him.

So, He reveals the dynamic elements of prayer by breaking down the act of asking. He illustrates our right of free access on the basis of divine goodness towards us as well as His willingness to give us whatever we ask (demonstrating earnestness), seek (the next level that shows true perseverance), and knock (a proof of intention, perseverance and diligence). If these elements are not evident in prayer, you may not have asked anything hitherto (John 16:24). The mystery of prayer is brought to light by our Lord here. In prayer, we don’t just voice a desire, we connect God with our sense of need, a real desire for the blessing, and the conviction that they would be supplied by God only. So we have no other means or choice than to press—ask, seek and knock.

Prayer is deeper than what you think. We who are imperfect fathers are never so unnatural to deny necessary supplies to our needy children. We make sure we give them, but not what would be useless to them or hurt them. Understanding this should free us from any erroneous understanding of prayer: which is not a mere lethargic experience. By prayer, you can change any condition no matter how desperate. It is as simple as asking whatever you need from God, and the promise is ever golden—everyone who asks receives.

Quote for the Day: “Asking is a right when you ask aright. Everything operates by the dynamics of principles. In the principle for obtaining whatever we ever need, prayer is the appointed means.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you for always assuring me that my prayers never falls to the ground. I receive new confidence and a renewed hope in your promise that I have everything I ask — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
