A Call You Must Not Miss

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Sunday, May 17, 2026

Today’s Text: 1 Samuel 3:1–10; 1 Samuel 12:1–5

Key Verse: 1 Samuel 3:10 (ESV) — “And the Lord came and stood, calling as at other times, ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ And Samuel said, ‘Speak, for your servant hears.’”

God’s call is never accidental, casual, or meaningless. It comes with purpose, urgency, and divine assignment, and one of the clearest biblical pictures of how to respond is found in Samuel, a boy whose life was marked by diligence, faithfulness, and yieldedness. In a generation that often chases attention rather than divine approval, Samuel stands as a rebuke and a model: he listened when others were distracted, served when others were sleeping, and yielded when others were self-directed. His life teaches us that divine attention is often attracted by holy responsiveness.

The context matters: 1 Samuel 3 presents a time when the word of the Lord was rare, and visions were not widespread. That spiritual silence was not because God had withdrawn His heart, but because the people had grown dull, careless, and unresponsive. In contrast, Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli, remaining near the ark, faithful in service, and ready to hear when God called. His tenderness toward God’s voice was the fruit of consistent devotion, and his obedience became the doorway to prophetic ministry and national influence.

This is where our generation must examine itself. Many are frustrated that God seems silent, yet often the issue is not God’s absence but human indifference, spiritual haste, and lack of consecration. Diligence is being replaced by laziness, faithfulness by inconsistency, and yieldedness by stubborn self-will. But Samuel’s story shows that God still calls those who are attentive, teachable, and surrendered. What this generation is losing is not merely information, but the capacity to recognize divine visitation because too many are too busy, too shallow, or too distracted to say, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.”

Samuel’s life also reveals that divine attention is not reserved for the loudest, most visible, or most impressive. It belongs to those who are faithful in hidden places, obedient in small things, and available when God speaks. He did not gain God’s attention through performance but through readiness. And that is the rebuke to a generation that wants platforms without process, power without purity, and prominence without prayer. When diligence, faithfulness, and yieldedness are absent, divine callings are ignored, assignments are delayed, and destinies remain underdeveloped.

Action Steps: Today, return to a life of attentive prayer, consistent service, and wholehearted obedience. Remove distractions that keep you from hearing God clearly and cultivate the discipline of waiting before Him. Refuse the spirit of carelessness and self-will, and choose the posture of Samuel: available, teachable, and yielded. Ask the Lord to make you sensitive enough to hear His call and faithful enough to obey it.

Quote for the Day: “A generation that will not listen cannot be led; divine attention rests where diligence, faithfulness, and yieldedness make room for God’s voice.” — (Simon Olatunji #quotablequotes)

Let Us Pray: Lord, thank You for the example of Samuel, a servant who heard Your voice and obeyed Your call. Deliver me from distraction, carelessness, and self-will. Teach me to be diligent in prayer, faithful in service, and yielded in heart. Open my ears to Your voice and make my life responsive to Your will, that I may not miss the call You have placed upon me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
