A Good and Noble Heart

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, October 8, 2021

Today’s Text: Luke 8:4-15

Key Verses: Luke 8:15 (GNT) “But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

Diogenes, a Greek and prominent symbol of Cynic philosophy was a controversial figure who spent his whole life in search of honesty. In the end, he concluded that an honest man is hard to find or could not be found. However, in his opinion, honesty is not just the best policy; it is the only policy. The most important thing he said in his ignorance and cynicism was that honesty is a mark of any man or woman who lives in God’s presence. One can only wonder if he heard or read Psalm 15:1-2 where David sang, “Lord, who may dwell in Your holy hill? He who walks uprightly.”

Every culture; every race adores the place of a noble and honest heart. One question that every child of God needs to ask today is: how noble in heart, sincere, honest, and honorable am I in all I do; and especially concerning the word of God? Will a cynic man, who does not know God, see me and find a good and noble heart in me? Does my heart condition allow the fruit of God’s word to take root in me, and does my life ring true before the watching word? If a Diogenes lives in my neighborhood, would he find me an honest believer with a good and noble heart, or one that fades truth, and exaggerates now and then?

In the words of Jesus, the word of God cannot take root in any heart, except it is good and noble. According to our Lord’s summary of the parable, only those with a noble and good heart, could hear the word, cling to it. Only they could endure and produce good fruit. Friends, it is high time we turn to God and ask Him to heal our heart condition and give us a good and honest heart. We all need honesty as an integral part of our nature. We need a genuine spirit that is open to the works of true regeneration that the Holy Spirit is doing within us.

Quote for the Day: “To receive God's Word retentively and bear needed fruit, we would do more than receive it attentively; we would approach it with an honest heart.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I surrender everything that I am, and everything that I'm striving to be to you. I open the deepest recesses of my heart and invite Your Spirit to control me on the inside. I offer my heart to you for the nobility of your Spirit, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D
