A Mock Test

Today’s Text: 2 Kings 2:23-25

Key Verses: 2 Kings 2:23 (ESV): “He went up from there to Bethel, and while he was going up on the way, some small boys came out of the city and jeered at him, saying, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!”

What do you do when life places a helpless fellow, a disabled person, or just an ordinary man on your way on the account of his supposed personal disability or defect. How would you handle a novice that is trying to figure out life? Or, a confused friend who is completely at a loss for shaping a future and a hope? Before you quickly suggest an answer. What on earth do you think provoked God with the action of these men? — They failed God’s mock test. Life itself is a test.

When we started our church, we were faced with situations in which two people were so despised and scorned so much that we were advised not to allow them. Voices from all directions mocked them but we heeded the voice of God and, I believe and I’m grateful that we did not fall the test. Today, we can look back and say, like Christ: “where are your accusers.”

When those boys said, “Go up, thou bald head!" They mocked his naïveté, ridiculing him for inability to go up, or be taken up like Elijah. They only added his baldness to revile him more. Friends, nothing is more contemptible than scorning people on account of physical or spiritual defects. Mocking others is a direct failure of God’s test. It is a show of failed character: a demonstration of vanity and pride. Any reviler of others based on their defects is impious and ungodly. Remember, you can neither make a hair nor add a cubit to your stature.

Quote for the Day: “I have found a quick path to self mockery that God’s people should not walk. Seeking to impress people leads to depress person.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, we pray the prayer of Nehemiah today: please hear us, our God, when we are despised. And, turn their insults back on their own heads— in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
