Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, October 30, 2022
Today’s Text: Romans 8:9-17
Key Verse: Romans 8:14 (NLT): “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.”
It was a popular custom that dates back to the days of Christ, to inscribe a mark upon a person, animal, building or a monument to tell of its origin, purpose or ownership. In the same way, in the City of God, we read in Revelation 21:14 that there are twelve foundations on which the names of the Twelve Apostles of the risen Lord had been engraved. This reveals how important it is to God to reveal His own people, and bear testimony of their affiliation with Him. One of the surest way by which God authenticates His people is by putting His Holy Spirit in them. The duties of the Holy Spirit include reminding us that, as God’s own people, we have no share in unrighteousness; but He also teaches us all truth pertaining to God; and at the same time, leads us to will and to do His (God’s) good will.
The apostle Paul wanted the people in the church at Rome to understand that their identity was based on being adopted members of God’s family (Romans 8:15). Because they had been born of the Spirit (v. 14), no longer did they need to be enslaved to things that didn’t really matter. Rather, through the gift of the Spirit, they were “heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” (v. 17); and must allow the Holy Spirit of God to call the shots at all time. As true children of God, we are free from all negative dispositions—servile, rebellion, egoistic, sensual and selfish urges. Instead , our true mark is that we have a new urge, produced by the Spirit of God convincing us to will and to work God’s good pleasure.
Quote for the Day: “For though we as believers in Christ are a paradox of two natures—we recognize the co-existence of both—but our true mark and identity is the nature and the spirit of Christ, not the Adamic nature.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank You for sending Your Holy Spirit to comfort us in our weaknesses; to give us strength when we cannot take another step; and, to guide us to live daily by the Truth that is found in Your Word. Please help me Lord, to live out of my central identity as Your child — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my Love and Prayers,
