A Sober Note

Daily Scripture Threshing for Saturday, April 8, 2023

Today’s Text: 1 Peter 4:1-11

Key Verses: 1 Peter 4:1 (ESV): “Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin."

Modernism has ushered in changing meaning of almost everything — marriage, gender, sexuality, morality, good, life, etc. This is so bad that the word meaning itself is almost totally meaningless and empty. The emptiness this brings to humanity is already sobering and humbling. However, the world system further seeks to attack the only possible way by which we could find meaning. That is why it seeks to replace the story and essence of Easter to a egg hunting game. A time calling for a most deep reflection is turned into a fun fair moment in which decorated artificial eggs made of plastic are hidden for children to find.

This morning, Apostle Peter’s admonition redirects us to the sobering realities and meditation necessary for the moments following Jesus Christ’s suffering. He had been crucified and died for us. The apostle takes us back to the foot of the cross, and calls us to something deeper than remembrance and celebration. He calls us to reflection and meditation. That’s what Easter should be all about. A solemn time of hope, reflection and soberness. That is how not to live the rest of our earthly folks live when Christ suffered for us. Let us give up fun-fair, live sober, and pursue the will of God.

Quote for the Day: “Contrast is made in scripture between living for God and living for self—being alert and of sober in mind is living for God while debauchery, lust, drunkenness, and detestable reckless behavior is living for self.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please keep me recklessness of the flesh. My dreams are too small, my desires are too selfish, my actions are too sinful for me to focus on what I think is best. Please redirect me O Lord to live soberly for You — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.

Your Darling Bishop (DaBishop)
