Follow the Master

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Monday, April 13, 2026

Today’s Text: Matthew 4:18–22

Key Verse: “And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” — Matthew 4:19 (KJV

Today’s threshing brings us into the blessed simplicity of discipleship—the call to follow Jesus. Before the miracle of ministry, there must be the obedience of following. Christ does not merely invite us to admire Him from a distance; He calls us to walk behind Him, learn from Him, and become like Him. To follow the Master is to surrender our own direction and trust His wisdom, His timing, and His way. The Christian life begins not with self-assertion, but with holy submission to the voice of the One who calls.

When Jesus called Peter, Andrew, James, and John, He called them in the midst of ordinary work. They were casting nets, mending nets, and tending to daily responsibilities when the voice of the Master interrupted their routine. This shows us that divine calling often meets us in the common places of life. Jesus still calls men and women in the middle of work, family, struggle, and responsibility. The question is not whether He is calling, but whether we are willing to leave what is familiar in order to walk where He leads.

To follow the Master means more than believing in Him; it means yielding to Him. Many admire Christ’s teaching, but true discipleship requires movement, surrender, and loyalty. The disciples “straightway” left their nets, their boat, and their father, because the call of Jesus was greater than their attachments. Their response teaches us that following Christ will always require a release of something else. We cannot cling to our old security and fully embrace His new purpose. The hand that holds too tightly to earthly things cannot easily take hold of eternal calling.

Following the Master also means learning His pace. The Lord does not call us to run ahead in pride or lag behind in fear. He calls us to walk with Him, step by step, through obedience, trust, and dependence. There are times when following Jesus feels costly, uncertain, or contrary to human logic. Yet every true disciple discovers that the safest place in the world is in the path of obedience. His way may not always be easy, but it is always right. His path may challenge the flesh, but it always leads to life.

The promise of Jesus is not only direction but transformation. “I will make you fishers of men.” He does not merely summon followers; He shapes them. The Master turns ordinary people into vessels of kingdom purpose. He teaches, corrects, strengthens, and sends. Those who follow Him faithfully begin to reflect His heart for people, His compassion for the lost, and His power for service. In this way, discipleship becomes both a journey and a making. Christ calls us as we are, but He never leaves us as we are.

Those who follow the Master will learn that His call is still the highest call. Human voices may compete for our attention, but none can compare with the authority of Jesus. He calls us out of darkness into light, out of self-will into surrender, out of fear into faith, and out of ordinary living into eternal purpose. To follow Him is not loss; it is the beginning of true life.

Action Steps: Today, ask the Lord to help you follow Him more closely and more faithfully. Lay down whatever competes with His voice, whether fear, comfort, habit, or ambition. Listen for His direction in Scripture and prayer, and obey what He reveals. Choose to walk behind the Master in humility, trust, and wholehearted devotion. Let your life answer His call with immediate obedience.

Quote for the Day: “To follow the Master is to exchange self-direction for divine direction and ordinary living for kingdom purpose.” — (Simon Olatunji #quotablequotes)

Let Us Pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for calling me to follow Your Son, Jesus Christ. Give me a willing heart that responds quickly to Your voice and a faithful spirit that walks closely with You. Help me to lay down every net that keeps me from full obedience. Teach me to trust Your direction, embrace Your will, and reflect Your heart in all I do. Let my life be a true witness of what it means to follow the Master. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
