A Sure Refuge and Strength

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, May 14, 2023

Today’s Text: Psalm 46:1-11

Key Verses: Psalm 46:1 (ESV): “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."

Among the topmost rated concerns of men and women around the world are individual's need for protection from physical harm, as well as the need for emotional well-being. Indeed, most other things we need are for the sake of making sure our sense of security is not under threat. Our sense of refuge and strength play so huge part in our overall mental and physical health. Populous Abraham Maslow acknowledged and rated safety as a basic human need, representing the second tier in the hierarchy. But this scripture reveals that God cares even much more about our security and safety.

Psalms 46 offers us one of the best summations of the all encompassing troubles as well as overwhelming saving grace of God throughout the Testaments.  While reading through, one can safely picture the deliverance from Egypt, Ammon, Moab, and Assyria, and that of our escape from the grip of Satan — and from sin, the curse of the Law, and ultimately from the wrath to come.

This song of the sons of Korah shines brightly as a major Old Testament reminder of the New Testament believers’ refuge and strength through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Ours is even better, brighter and surer. While nations continue to angrily rage like, or blown by, the wild waves of troubles clearly pictured in this Psalm, under the new covenant, we as God’s people have a calm, peaceful river of life flowing from within them.

Quote for the Day: Our redemption brings us much more than gladness, it breaks and ends our days of sadness, and institutes a reign of inner peace that no troubled wind can alter. (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord God of Heaven, my refuge, strength and peace: thank You for Your unrelenting light and peace that shroud me in any hour of darkness. Thank You for Your shield and strength by which I may rest secure under the shadow of your wings. Let there be no time, O my God, when I will no longer feel graciously secure no matter how long or thick the night — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
