A True Independence

Today’s Text: John 8:31-36

Key Verse: John 8:32 (ESV): “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Let me first wish America, and all Americans, a happy Independence Day today. Independence brings us the idea of freedom — freedom from being governed or ruled by another country; a liberation from dependence upon another; or liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another. In the spiritual sense it is freedom — a liberation from the law of sin and death which passes down to all humanity from Adam and Eve. Therefore, as far as all of humanity is concerned, there are no true independence or freedom as far as the spiritual bondage that hold us to Adamic fall is in place. Or can’t we see through our national events, experience and news that the more claims of freedom we make, the more bound to egos, fear, felonies, frustration and fury we are. We are therefore reminded of the words of Jesus that point us to our only sure source of true liberation.

Knowing the truth, Jesus says, is what makes us free indeed. By “the truth,” He is not referring to just an idea or a philosophy; but He was revealing the imperative need of all humanity for His person. It is He (Christ) alone that personifies truth. “...I Am the Truth.” He said. Therefore, being truly free — experiencing genuine liberation and independence — is knowing the Person of Jesus! So, if you are wondering why most who are celebrating independence and liberation are still enslaved to the implications of sin and death, then, to you the mystery is unraveled here: Only Jesus offers true liberation to humanity. Only Him came to set people free. He is the truth (John 14:6). When you know Him, you are set free. In today’s text, the way to be free indeed is only through Him, the Son of God. He is our true independence. All who are in Christ Jesus are free indeed! Those who reject Him may know the law, know their rights, knows the emancipation and all amendment laws. They may be free born citizens of any independent country; but they are still not liberated.

Quote for the Day: “Jesus sets free from slavery to spiritual slavery to sin, and physical slavery to self." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, we have placed our faith in the wrong things, but there is no true freedom elsewhere, except in You. Help us, O Lord, to walk in the liberty with which Christ has made us free, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
