A True Israelite Indeed

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, July 6, 2022

Today’s Text: John 1:43-51

Key Verse: John 1:47 (ESV): “Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!”

Jesus' comment to Nathanael reveals something deep about the attribute of Christ. We must never lose sight of who He is even though He emptied Himself for our sake to become a man. He is truly and fully God. He knows all things about us—our uprisings and down-fallings. So, He did not just label Nathaniel a "true Israelite." God knows our honesty. In Luke 12:2-3 Jesus taught us that there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. Whatsoever we have spoken in darkness shall be brought to light. When we cover hideous life with intense pretense and odious secrecy with religiosity, He sees us. Nathaniel was far away; across the other side, but God knows Him in every detail.

Skeptics make several propositions as to what Jesus' remark about Nathanael means. Some think He was only making an assessment of Nathanael for being undoubtedly willing to speak his mind. Some think He was making a friendly joke as a way of responding with sarcasm to his doubt that “can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” But, no: the clause “having no deceit in him” gives a deeper thrust into the intention. It is therefore not a play on words. All Israelites are descendants of Jacob, a habitual liar, who manipulated his brother, and tricked his parents to steal the firstborn blessing; but that is not God’s expectation for true Isrealiteship. A true Israelite lives life based upon a genuine divine encounter. Life begins for him at Jacobs’s rebirth when He confesses his hideous life before the Lord. An Israelite indeed shall no longer be that leg-puller (Jacob); but a prince with God. So, let’s go ahead and ask: who are you?

Quote for the Day: “The God we serve has no shadows in Him. Our lives therefore are reflection of His light , and has no need or reason for being shaded." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, Your word says You desire truth in the inward being. Lord, teach me wisdom to be true in the inward parts, and plain in all my ways, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
