Abandoning All

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Friday, July 3, 2026

Today’s Text: John 21:1–14

Key Verse: John 21:7 (ESV) — “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he wrapped his outer garment around him . . . and jumped into the water.

God does not merely call us to know about Jesus from afar, but to recognize Him and respond with wholehearted movement toward Him. When Peter heard, “It is the Lord,” he did not delay; he abandoned comfort, convenience, and caution in order to get to Jesus. That is the spirit of true discipleship: not only believing in Christ, but moving toward Him, removing any background. Peter’s leap was an act of holy urgency. Ask yourself: do I know and love the Lord enough to provoke such urgent action?

In today’s text, the Lord had already prepared a meal on the shore, reminding us that Jesus is not One we seek in vain, but also the One who has already made provision for us. Knowing this should provoke the Peter’s kind of response in us so that when Christ is present, nothing else should compete for our first movement. The soul that truly knows the Lord cannot remain indifferent.

Abandoning all means more than surrendering possessions; it means yielding the heart’s grip on control, fear, delay, and lesser priorities. It is the willingness to leave the familiar boat, the unfinished net, and the safety of distance for the nearness of Jesus. Where others may see a sudden splash, heaven sees a surrendered heart.

The deeper life in Christ often begins with a decisive step of abandonment. We grow spiritually not by clinging tighter to ourselves, but by running faster to Him. The closer we come to Jesus, the more clearly we see that He is enough. As a child of God, today’s call is simple: when you know it is the Lord, move toward Him without delay. Let your heart be quick to obey, quick to worship, and quick to surrender. The life that abandons all for Christ will never be empty, for in Him there is fullness of joy and purpose.

Action Steps: Take time today to identify one area where hesitation has kept you at a distance from Jesus. Surrender that area in prayer and ask for holy urgency in obedience. Choose one practical act of response today—worship, repentance, reconciliation, or quiet time with the Lord—that says, “I am coming to You.”

Quote for the Day: “True devotion does not wait for perfect conditions; it leaps toward Jesus when it knows He is near.” — (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)

Let Us Pray: Lord Jesus, when my heart recognizes You, keep me from delay and distraction. Give me the courage to leave behind whatever keeps me at a distance from You. Teach me to abandon all for the joy of Your presence, and let my life be marked by eager obedience, joyful surrender, and deep love. In Your powerful name I pray. Amen.
