Today's Text: Genesis 1:1-31
Key Verse: Genesis 1:31 (ESV): "And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day."

During their esrly years, I watched my kids play with lego. I once saw one of them feel like a master craftsman who just meticulously create a masterpiece, inspecting each detail, and finally stepping back with a sense of immense satisfaction. It immediately gave me a glimpse into God's perspective on His creation. The phrase "And God saw that it was good" is repeated throughout the creation account in Genesis, not as a casual remark, but as a profound affirmation of His work.
This phrase, and especially the final declaration that it was "very good," introduces the context of the entire creation narrative as it reveals divine approval. God's intentionality in creating a beautiful world and the inherent value of created things set the stage for understanding the original, perfect state of the world before the introduction of sin.
The phrase "And God saw that it was good" is a powerful declaration that signifies God's complete divine approval and affirmation of His creation. The Hebrew word for "good" is "tov." It is a stem that goes beyond a simple, positive review. It conveys a sense of beauty, beneficence, and moral rightness. It means that God's creation was perfect, beneficial, harmonious, and in line with His divine purpose and standards. It was all correct. That was the divine approval: a divine declaration of satisfaction that indicated that it met God's perfect standards.
It is also a statement of intention and purpose. God intends that everything He created was intended for His will and made to function precisely as He intended. It also reveals harmony and wholeness. This is the biblical concept of "shalom," or God's plan for a flourishing and whole world. A plan for goodness to give us a future and a hope. And lastly, the phrase reveals the God put us here with an intention of intrinsic worth, beauty, and moral purity before we allowed sin to alter everything. But, it is never too late.
In God's character, He continues to offer free recreation through His perfect provision of salvation through Christ. Though we were marred by the effects of sin, He gives us the opportunity to be ultimately restored to His plans and purpose through the works of Jesus Christ on the cross.
Action Steps: Reflect on the inherent goodness of God's creation, from the beauty of nature to the complexity of the human life. Acknowledge and appreciate the perfect order God established. Consider how you can be a better steward of God's creation. Embrace God's provision of a second chance through Christ, and experience new creation today.
Quote for the Day: "The motif of creation's original goodness reveals that God's purpose is different from what we have. Man's present woes and chaos are his own creation; but God will restores peace in the heart of anyone who believes His plan for salvation through Jesus Christ." (Simon Olatunji #quotablequote)
Let Us Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the beauty and perfection of Your creation. Help us to see the world as You do, and to appreciate the inherent goodness in all that You have made. Grant us wisdom and strength to be good stewards of Your creation and to live in a way that reflects Your perfect design. We pray for the restoration of Your "peace" on earth: a peace that comes from knowing and accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and savior. We as these things in Jesus's most glorious name. Amen.
