Allowance for Others

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, August 12, 2022

Today’s Text: Ephesians 4:1-16

Key Verse: Ephesians 4:2 (NLT): “Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.”

Today’s scripture passage invariably places three vital qualities of a true believer before us — attributes that are consistent with the three most prominent themes of the premier public sermons of our Lord. If following Christ calls for any qualifying attributes, nothing will be more important than those related to the blessed pursuance of poverty in spirit; meekness; and being merciful to others. These are virtues that each believer must put on over anything else to be genuine follower of Jesus Christ.

This text is a reminder of believers’ unity of the bond of perfectness described in Colossians 3:14. Unfortunately, today’s body of Christ seems to have taken to a radical departure from that path of faith. We only keep them dogmatically and talk about them. We are happy to keep anything consistent with traditional landmark of faith in confession. But we make no place for them in our practice. Perhaps, we might learn from a Hebrew mythology which held that the Patriarch Abraham once received a strange old weary traveler into his tent. After washing the stranger’s feet according to Jewish tradition, the patriarch’s fed the stranger with an unmatched generosity. But he (Abraham) observed that the stranger said no prayer. So, he asked: "Don't you worship God?" “No, I reverence no god." Replied the man.

This response got Abraham so incensed that he grabbed the stranger by the shoulders, and threw him out of his tent. But the myth has it that after the old man departed, God called to his friend Abraham and asked where the stranger was. Abraham replied, "I forced him out because he did not reference you." And God answered, "Although he dishonors me, I have been patient with him these eighty years. How come you could not endure him one night?" This now a food for thought for all of us who profess to be like Jesus.

Quote for the Day: “It is imperative that those of us that have received mercy will show the same to others.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, I thank You for Your forbearance and mercies in my life; and I ask You O Lord to help me love other, forebear with them and show kindness — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,
