Today’s Text: 1 Corinthians 12:12-27

Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 12:26 (ESV): “If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.”

Today, we have Olympic games in which a nation celebrates when a person gets the trophy. The victory of one is usually celebrated as the victory of all. I doubt, though, that we usually own their shipwreck the same way; but at least we all see how Nigerians recently celebrate and own the gold victory when 25-year-old Nigerian Tobi Amusan made history by winning Nigeria's first gold medal in the 100 metres hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in USA. It was indeed a good example of one is honored and all rejoice.

More populous than the Olympic in the days when the Apostle Paul wrote today’s text was the Gladiator games. It was in its peak during the 1st and 2nd centuries BC/AD. It was a contest in which hungry animals were made to fight other hungry animals or humans; or human gladiators who are not necessarily enemies are made to fight against each other just to entertain the people. Thus promoting a culture of rejoicing at the suffering of others. That was the main significance of the gladiator game. And, the other is like it: it preserved an atmosphere of violence in time of peace while entertaining people with the hurt of others.

The gospel of Christ disapproves of this outrightly — not just because it is idolatrous; but because it is inhumane to rejoice while others suffer. This text places emphasis on the perfect unity of the body of Christ as members in one body and with one another. We are spiritually joined together, and united so as to feel together as well as feel for one another. We live out the best Olympic spirit — not only in trophies but also in adversities. For if one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.

Quote for the Day: “Believers in Jesus Christ are all caught up in an inescapable network of mutuality. We suffer pain together, pray together, and shall also reign together.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, please help me to love those You love and accept everyone in the spirit of genuine brotherhood — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,
