As I Have Loved You

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, December 9, 2021

Today’s Text: John 15:12-17

Key Verse: John 15:12 (CSB): “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved you.”

The gift of friendship is one of the greatest blessings of God to humanity, apart from the saving grace of Christ. Without it, our world will be worse than chaos itself. But we can be grateful for human friendship! It is such a beautiful gift, and precious to enjoy. Nobody can ever imagine how dismal this world would be if affectionate concern and sympathy, and fraternal thrust and solace were taken away from us. Today, God wants us to mediate on why our friendship—and especially love for one another—matters. He wants us to consider why and how we can be more like Christ in our relationships. Indeed, if you want to understand how important this is in the mind of God, you can as well ask: “Why is the devil so hell-bent on destroying our relationships?!’ Or just what does the phrase “as I have loved you” means.

Jesus really means that we all follow His footsteps in love. And of course, if we know God, and have relationship with Him; He will influence our attitude toward the kind of friends we are, and keep. On this matter, there is no preference or choice. Our text is clear and emphatic. “This is my command: Love one another as I have loved you.” Those words are taken directly by the beloved apostle (of love) from the mouth of our Lord Himself. We already have something in common. We are all recipients of the love of God in/through Christ. We are all bought by His precious blood. We all all brought from darkness into His Kingdom of marvelous light. We are all debtors of such a great love. Therefore, we are all commanded to also be connected with one another in the same spirit of love as we have all enjoyed in Christ.

Quote for the Day: “We are connected by Christ; not by secular culture which estranges and builds walls. Love for fellow believers must not be secularly cultured. It must be deep, genuine and Christlike.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, Bless us with Love, O Loving Father: Grant that we may love as you Love! That we may show patience, tolerance, and kindness. That we may gladly share in one another’s joy and joyfully bear one another’s burden, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
