Asking Big: Praying with Jabez Part 5

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, August 24, 2023

Today’s Text: 1 Chronicles 4:1-10

Key Verse: 1 Chronicles 4:10 (KJV): “And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.”

One of the sorest lies the devil ever told Christians is that you are asking too much or too big from God. Whereas, in actual fact, there is nothing we could ever ask or imagine that God is unable to give us immeasurably more. The Jabez story is such a comforting Old Testament testimony to this truth. God granted him that which he requested. Whatever was Jabez’s motivation for such paradigm shift and the desire to seek such enormous change is not as important as the fact that he enjoyed a remarkable answer to his prayers.

The God that answered in Jabez’s instance, is still alive today. He is not just the prayer hearer, but the answerer of the petitions of His people. If you, like Jabez, could learn not to trust your own or your people’s power or promise, but only in God’s blessing and help; and you demonstrate such trustful reliance in prayer — I tell you, nothing can be too big that God cannot do for you. Jabez was tired of his sorrowful straight jackets, but he would not settle for anything little. No, but he asked for an enlarged coast.

The wicked Canaanites that occupied his land also makes his space straight and opportunities limited. He (Jabez) by this prayer was able to root them out because God granted him what he requested. Elisha’s request for double portion was outrageous but God granted him what he requested. The blind Bartimeus’s request was “that I may see!” God granted it. Peter asked to walk on water; and God granted his request. What would you like God to do for you? Just ask, and you shall receive. He has a surprising life in store for you if and e hen you're bold enough to ask.

Quote for the Day: “God’s way of enlarging our coast today is not just by extending the borders of our lands, but by multiplying the numbers of our disciples.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, thank you because if I ask anything according to Your will You hear me. Lord enlarge my the coast of my heart and broaden my vision so I may ask according to the largeness and richness of the unspeakable resources of Your will for me — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.
