Today’s Text: 1 Corinthians 10:23-29
Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 10:23 (KJV): “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.”
I have always been blessed by Steven Covey’s the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. One of the most profound pieces from the renowned author is what I am about to share today. And it goes thus: “You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage—pleasantly, smilingly, nonapologetically, to say “no” to other things. And the way you do that is by having a bigger “yes” burning inside. The enemy of the “best” is often the “good.” I love that. However, in a generation where men and women now redefine what is good in comparative standards, today’s text is calling on us to learn the wisdom of judging from the highest good in the interest of the kingdom.
“All things are lawful for me,” he said, but they all must be subjected to our regard for the effect or influence that each thing, event, and action has upon others, ourselves, and most importantly upon the overall goal and benefit of God’s kingdom at large. It will be good if every believer in Christ will always ask him/herself how any given act or interest tends to be a selfish and unprofitable venture rather than something that yields spiritual profit for God, others, and ourselves. This is without prejudice to the fact that such actions, events, or things are considered good. In the theology of Paul, it’s not just bad that is the enemy of good. Something may be good in itself, but adverse to our lives and purpose. Heaven does not judge a thing good if it does not bless and build up others but self. This is basic to the practical rules of the Christian life.
Quote for the Day: “Every human reserves the freedom to act and speak in keeping with their conscience; but every Christian conscience is guided and judge by sole interest of God’s kingdom.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, your word says that if anyone lacks wisdom, they should ask, and you will give them generously. Please give me wisdom to live in ways that will bless others and profit your kingdom — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my Love and Prayers,
