Be Still (Part Five)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, March 22, 2022

Today’s Text: Psalm 4:1-8

Key Verse: Psalm 4:4 (ESV): “Be angry, and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts on your beds, and be silent. Selah!”

It is not just when we are in danger or affliction that God wants us to exercise the right and power to be still. Our adamic nature often finds us in an angle of offense — when, if unrestrained, the darkness of anger casts its ill shadows upon us. Anger is a gift of God—I’m positive that many will be surprised to hear that! But you need to know that anger is built into us to help us make a natural response to perceived threats. It is put in place to release the hormone adrenaline, tighten our muscles, and increase the human heart rate to fight and defend ourselves, or fly (flee) and protect ourselves. However, for the reason of our fallen nature, anger could be a huge problem when a person lacks restraints, and is not able to bring it under.

Today’s text comes as an admonition with two “Be”s — if you must, “be angry,” but if ever you are, “be still.” This was quoted by Apostle Paul in his admonition to New Testament believers in Ephesus and beyond (Eph 4:25). It is therefore a relevant New Testament admonition to reflect deeply upon who we are and let that consciousness promote or provoke a calmer and wiser reaction in us when faced with the temptation to flair up. The Masoretic Text and the Vulgate translate “be still.” as “repent” — meaning that God wants our reflection of every reason to be angry to bring a change of mind if we allow a still spirit. This, in the words of James (1:19), we are to: “Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” Additionally, the phrase “Stand in awe” tells us to be afraid, if not of the possible consequences of our anger, yet, at least, of God, who always jealousy fights our battles, and is an adversary to our adversaries. This is the proper reflection of a believer when provoked to anger.

Quote for the Day: “Each time we allow genuine reflection on the repercussion of our actions, we are given an occasions in which experiencing divine exoneration is even more powerful.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you will help me overcome the spirit of anger in me. Let Your spirit dwell inside me and drive out every influence of anger. Let Your word fill my heart and calm my nerves whenever the tension of anger builds up in me — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,
