Be Still (Part Four)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, March 21, 2022

Today’s Text: Nehemiah 8:9-12

Key Verse: Nehemiah 8:11 (ESV): “So the Levites calmed all the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy; do not be grieved.”

While the journey to exploring biblical calm continues, the question concerning what really make people calm, rested and happy remains and continues to ring bells. There are millions of printed volumes on libraries and personal shelves on how to enjoy inner peace. Indeed, messages on joy, peace and happiness flood our pulpits. Academic researchers keep attempting how to get to the root of this matter. But there, still, has never been any easy answer to the many questions that unsettle us.

Looking at the context of the passage before us—especially from the root siopao, meaning still, calm or quiet, one can see that we are never alone in whatever situations we are passing through. Like in our situations, everything surrounding the Jews conspired to affect their moods and stir the souls to trouble. They needed priestly encouragement to be calm and quiet. In the same way, if we listen to the voice of economic, social, political and security situation around us rather draw encouragement and happiness from the world of God, we would be sorry and depressed.

The only way to defeat the noise, escape depression and enjoy a truest calm spirit is if we draw our strength from scriptural admonition. True happiness never comes from without. It is from within. When we know this truth, we are set free to experience deep-seated genuine feelings of personal freedom, inner quietude and the calm that comes by the Holy Spirit. So, like the Levites stilled all the people, saying, “Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved,” I could hear the Holy Spirit speak peace to you today in whatever situation you may be, in Jesus mighty name.

Quote for the Day: “True and genuine happiness hinges upon divine presence. Therefore, men who cultivate God’s presence are the happiest of earth.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, when You made me, You said that I am perfect. You made me to live a prosperous life, full of happiness and peace. I release the power of Your world into my situations and command Your peace — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
