Beware of False Food

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, February 8, 2022

Today’s Text: John 6:22-40

Key Verse: John 6:35 (ESV): “Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.“

Years back, when I first toured Southwestern Seminary, I had had a considerably tiring flight from England and needed some bites and rest. The Riley Centre had no cafeteria but I saw a huge fruit basket upfront by the receptionist. That attractive sight was so refreshing. Unfortunately, and disappointingly, the fruits were all plastic or wooden. They looked so real and inviting but a single bite may have ruined my appetite or landed me in a dental emergency. Returning to my room, I grabbed an Oswald Chamber’s My Utmost for His Highest and the first page I opened illuminated the whole experience—Jesus is the bread of life.

During the days of Christ, crowds followed Him because they wanted real food. The woman of Samaria first wanted real water, and then asked Jesus for real bread. Yes, what we need to ask Jesus to give us is real bread. That’s what He offers — the real bread that gives life, not one that perishes. And He is that bread, the revealed and revealing Word of God. Knowing Jesus is to the human spirit, what bread is to the body. Don’t sink your teeth into false meal.

True human desires are satisfied with Jesus in our lives. Just as natural bread satisfied no one unless s/he appropriates and eats it; we must let our hunger prompt us to Jesus. He alone truly satisfies the real thirst and hunger of the soul and sustains the spiritual life. He gives strength to the weary. Seeking any other satisfaction outside Christ is thirsting and hungering after temporal and false food. But finding Jesus takes care of all those desires: that’s what it means to thirst and hunger no more.

Quote for the Day: “We may not find a truer or more pertinent metaphor today than Christ being the true Bread from heaven. We not find this true except our cravings find satisfaction in Him.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, You alone are the living bread that gives us true strength

and sustenance. Please fill our souls afresh today that we may be nourished to serve You continually — in Jesus’ name. Amens.

With all my Love and Prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
