Today’s Text: Numbers 16:1-15
Key Verse: Numbers 16:3 (ESV): “They assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! For all in the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is among them. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the Lord?”
Quarrelsome and seditious persons have always been among the people. If you are faced with challenges of strife with holy men or brethren today; just remember you are not alone. And if you happen to be the man with the presumptive spirit; it is a call to repentance. A long throw back in scriptural history reveals that presumptuous sin have always been among God’s people. And indeed, it happens both among the Levite, the clerical crop, and Reubenite, the lay. This sets a profound lesson before us. God sets those men as example to us. For rather than upholding the integrity of service and uniting to uplift the hands of the man of God, they united in discord. Rather yielding a call to service, they puffed in presumption.
Sometimes we have good reasons for complaints and protest but before we steer the opposition against a leader in the service of God, we must be careful not to be standing on God’s path. Any action that positions us as a detractor to God’s agenda or anointed purpose and call to service must be allayed and shunned. If God, in His wisdom, sets a leader, a Moses or Aaron ahead of us, they may not be the best of men; but He alone knows why He sets them before us. We must resist offenses, and such temptation as becoming over familiar with what God is doing. Instead, we must learn to be content with God’s timing and wisdom.
Learn from these presumptuous men: they died in a most different way. God’s work is not politics. And so, we must beware of factoring ungodly legislation into spiritual matters. Holy things belong to the Spirit, and may not be democratize. If you don’t understand what God is doing in others’ life; you better let Him do it. Shun any behavior of arrogance or disrespect that lets you transgress the limits of what is permitted for you or appropriate. Be content and patient in your allowed level of grace. Walk within the limitations of your calling. Paul, cautions us that even if we are called being a servant, we should care not for it (1 Corinthians 7:21).
Quote for the Day: “Assuming a position or path that God has not permitted you to walk in is presumptuous. It is like rebellion against Him.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, please let your Holy Spirit move upon my life in a new way today. Help me to accept Your call and rely on and be content in Your permissible grace in my life. I reject every evil motivation towards disobedience and rebellion — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
