Broken and Poured Out

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, April 1, 2021

Today’s Text: Luke 22:14-23

Key Verse: Luke 22:20 (ESV) — “And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.”

Today, some Christian churches are or will be observing Communion services to commemorate what is known as Maundy Thursday in memory of Jesus’ Last Supper with His disciples. But like we said in our meditation yesterday, let us not worry so much on the day as on the eternal message of the biblical revelation on the events. We must ask ourselves what lessons we may learn from every word that Jesus spoke at the table that day. We must become fully aware of the spiritual import of the chosen elements at Lord’s Supper table: the bread and the wine. These are not simply chosen because are food. They symbolize the fact that Jesus is our true source of strength and of joy. He is the one and only constant Source of our spiritual nourishment and strength. He is the source of the joy which our hearts need for eternal gladness with God.

The broken bread, the outpoured wine speak of solace for humanity’s troubled hearts and broken lives. Jesus was broken to bind up the broken hearted, the marred, the weary, the poor, and of course any form of troubled life. He is the poured out tonic that washes off all griefs and pains that burden and break the hearts. He washes away the shame and the darkness of our broken lives; and most importantly, He lifts up our bowed heads and spirits at the foot of His cross and offers us full redemption and propitiation from sins. That’s what we celebrate today: the body broken, and the blood poured out for us. Each person eats of that bread and drinks of that cup when s/he realizes his brokenness and emptiness; declares personal need of/for Jesus; affirms a conviction that Christ’s sacrifice was offered for him; puts his faith in the redeeming work of Jesus Christ; and then recognizes Jesus Christ as His Lord and Savior. Then he draws true spiritual strength and nutrients. He finds true joy and liberation.

Quote for the Day: “Christ’s propitiation never finds its meaning until each person’s appropriation of its provisions. (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his abundant mercy has begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, in Jesus mighty name. Amen.

Happy new month. With all my love and prayers,
