Building for Abiding Reward

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, April 14, 2022

Today’s Text: 1 Corinthians 3:10-17

Key Verse: 1 Corinthians 3:14 (ESV): “If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward.”

What a text before us today. It doesn’t look like it’s funny, does it?! We all go through tests and it’s difficult enough already. But how do we begin to explain the test of fire. But yes, God’s chosen litmus by which all works of men shall be tested is fire. This is symbolic and figurative: God proofs and tests the genuineness of all our works in the flesh and in the assignment He committed to our hand.

Like fire does its work unchecked and it takes only substance of genuine character that can withstand its assaults and outlast its ravages. Only genuine works of faith will invariably survive God’s scrutiny when all our spiritual works are proved at the end. This is an important aspect of the Christian doctrine. We are convinced that as all of us build, we are not only building our own characters and destinies, but we are also building those of others — and whatever we do has/have eternal consequences on us and others as well.

Therefore, we must live each day with the consciousness that God takes proving our works seriously. This hour of meditation is an opportunity to ask yourself: Is my daily walk or work genuine, sound, and workmanlike? If tested by fire, will what I build survive? Am I accruing impurities that shall burn off, or faithfully and diligently laboring for enduring price whose qualities shine out more if subject to fire? May we all live each day, and carry out every duty with this consciousness.

Quote for the Day: “God’s judgement is likened to fire because it is never discriminatory. It is decisive and only genuine characters and works shall ever survive its elements.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for this opportunity to reflect on how my walk and works shall be tested with fire. Please give me a genuine spirit, and help me to build a life that both glorify You and endure the test of fire — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
