Building to Pattern (Part Four)

Today’s Text: James 1:12-18

Key Verse: James 1:17 (KJV) — “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning."

Today, we are blessed with a scripture text which calls us to the unchangeableness of God. It helps us see another pattern in which or after which the church heritages built and must continue to build. Understanding this attribute of God is like understanding a story of a man traveling along a road who saw a great castle from afar. As the road winds, rises and falls; the castle sometimes seems to be nigh, another time afar off; one time on this hand, and at other times on the other side; it appears before, beside, or even behind. Meanwhile, the whole time, the castle stands still unmoved. Thus it is with God; sometimes He seemeth to be angry with us; whereas He is pleased. Sometimes we think He is far but He is at hand.

We sometimes face challenges that make us believe that God is distant and hiding His face in displeasure; but if we stand still, we shall see that in those moments, the light of His countenance shines brightly upon us. Our God us the same. He does not change at all. His word is “yea and amen” and He is not a man that He should change His mind. But the truth is that it is we, His people, not He, that have changed. We have shifted the ancient landmarks of apostolic submission. How then do we expect to have the miraculous spiritual landscape? All the perfect gifts still come till this day from above, from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow; but we must return and build according to scriptural pattern.

The church pattern remains premised upon the provision of all good and perfect things from above; but when we sway and stray from the pattern, we are led to begin to look elsewhere for the good things we think we're missing in places where they are not. It is our alteration of, and variation from biblical patterns that make our leaders, and some theologians assume or conclude that the operations of miracles of seers or seeing, of prophets or prophesying and of healing and other signs that Jesus and the apostles did — of which we are promised greater dimension — have ceased whereas there is no single scriptural basis for such secessionist theory.

Quote for the Day: “When cars move, travelers assume that lands and skies do move. The alterations in us make God appear to have moved, and changed place." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, We have seen the damages that our departure from you pattern has caused in our lands, worships and lives. Please restore us to the ancient landmarks and revive us again, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,
