Called to Be Exemplary (Part 2)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Saturday, June 6, 2020

Today’s Text: 1 Timothy 4:11-16

Key Verse: 1 Timothy 4:12 (ESV): “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.”

I once stumbled on an article by an unknown author who insisted that he would not give much interest or attention to any man’s religion unless evidence of it can be traced in his character. He bases his premise on the fact that lamps do not talk, yet their essence is communicated when they shine. Likewise, the person who professes to be a light in this dark world does not need to say it. Christians are expected to shine the light of Christ through their lifestyles. They are to live beyond blames and show others how to do the same.

Since yesterday, we started meditating on Paul’s exhortation to his son in the faith, and every believer, on the need to be mindful of how we live. His word rendered conversation in the text is from a Greek word signifying manner of life, or conduct. It is the core of the text; and his intent is to emphasize we’re never to act in any manner that may bring us into questionable or despicable character. Rather we are to model (set an example) a lifestyle becoming a believer in Christ and minister of His gospel in all ways. By so doing, not only will you earn respect regardless of your age; but you shall save the ministry from being evilly censured or brought under contempt on your account.
