Today’s Text: 1 Timothy 5:17-22

Key Verse: 1 Timothy 5:22 (KJV): “Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men's sins: keep thyself pure.”

Hitchhiking is no longer popular these days with Uber, Lyft, and others as it were a couple of years back. Late one night, a driver picked up a hitchhiker and began to be suspicious of his passenger. He checked to see if his wallet was safe in the coat he left on a seat. Unfortunately, it wasn't there! He immediately slammed on the brakes, ordered the hitchhiker out, and demanded that he hand over the wallet immediately! The frightened hitchhiker handed over a wallet, and the driver drove off. When he arrived home, he started to tell his wife about the experience, but she interrupted him, saying, "Man, you just robbed your passenger, sir, you left your wallet at home!"

While the original thrust of our text is an admonition for Timothy to guard against the possibility of rash appointments of people into the ministry, there is a broader sense to it. The Apostle Paul was teaching the young man the importance of making due inquiry before concluding on laying hands on anyone for ministry. Likewise, in everyday life, we are to eschew any instances of a rash decision. For instance, if you are unable to rightly distinguish between the worthy and the unworthy cause; it is always a good idea to be patient. The story in our introduction pictures a hasty man and ended up an unintentional robber. When we are hasty in joining issues; or approving or disapproving people; it is easy to participate in other men's sins and difficult to stay pure.

David was many miles off when Uriah was slain with the edge of the sword, yet the blood-guiltiness was laid upon him. Jonadab was guilty of Amnon's incest just by his subtle contrivance of that wickedness. Life is an intricate web already; and as God's children, we must deliberately stay clear of any act that willingly sets snares or stumbling on our, or another man’s, way. Through indiscriminate compliance, consenting, lousiness, and silence, a man may walk himself hurriedly under the burden of others.

Quote for the Day: “Winking at others in their wicked act, and/or holding our peace is as guilty as committing those sins.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord, deliver me from Blood-guiltiness, guard my tongue, and refrain me from presumptuous sins, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
