Today’s Text: Mark 6:30-34
Key Verse: Mark 6:31 (KJV): “And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.”
Like the word of the old Zion hymn: Come ye yourselves apart and rest awhile. Weary, I know it, of the press and throng; wipe from your brow the sweat and dust of toil. And in my quiet strength again be strong. It is God’s will for us to rest. He (God) himself exemplified the virtue of rest to us in the creation story. He was neither weary nor tired, but He rested. According to John Ker, doctor of divinity, God also signified rest to humanity in His material creation: in how He made the earth to revolve on her axis causes her to return at stated seasons under light and shade. There is wisdom for us when we watch the Sun, Moon and Stars. They take off to their daily hidings. We can also consider the flowers of the fields and see how they close their petals, and regularly observe their sleeping hours. I’m the same way the human strength has been naturally proportioned to renew daily when we learn the power of laying down our bodies to rest and refresh.
Jesus invited his disciples to the blessed peace of escaping the hustle bustle of life and the entanglement of public life so that they might enjoy the quiet of God’s presence. Burnout is not the plan of God for His people. In Isaiah 30:15, the Sovereign LORD, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In returning and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it. A wise Christian listens to Christ’s invitation to escape his restless excitement unto the presence of God, where, only, we find full calmness and true peace. The natural man always finds it difficult to depend on the unseen, spiritual power of God. The effect always is anxiety, worries and restless exertions. Therefore, why should you die before your time when it is wisdom just to shut all the noises out, mute all worries, and come apart to the restful presence of Christ.
Quote for the Day: “Spiritual faculties are subject to like effects as do the physical when strained, stressed and bereft of rest. The soul slides into weariness.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, move us to rest in your presence each day, and help us to be refreshed. Give us new strength to keep us running and never growing weary, walking and never fainting — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
